West Ashley High School places in culinary arts competition

West Ashley High School (WAHS) placed third in the statewide ProStart culinary arts competition in Greenville this spring. The team, consisting of Brazil Murray, Reggie Miller, Karlos Cruz-Reyes and Belle Lueagnamta (an exchange student from Thailand), was tasked with preparing a three-course meal in an hour, using only two butane burners. Their award-winning entree was a dijon and rosemary pork tenderloin.

The ProStart competition is sponsored by the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. The culinary arts presentations are evaluated on taste, skill, teamwork, and sanitation. Students on the top-five teams are awarded scholarships to help further their careers in the restaurant and food service industry.

The WAHS culinary arts program is led by Chef Jason Wheless, who had a long and distinguished career as a chef in some of Charleston’s finest restaurants. The culinary arts students participated in Hospitality Day at the Statehouse and also served 150 people at West Ashley’s Longest Table, sponsored by non-profit West Ashley United at Citadel Mall last month. In addition to its third place award in the state competition, the culinary arts team was presented with an indoor hydroponics garden for earning a perfect score for menu planning and budgeting. Many of the WAHS culinary arts students hold jobs in Charleston-area restaurants.
