West Ashley is becoming a frequent destination for the film industry. Filming is underway for the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, a show which depicts a crooked family if evangelists, starring Danny McBride and John Goodman. Citadel Mall (former Sears site) is being used as a production studio and is also the scene of the show’s worship center. HBO recently filmed scenes for its Vice Principals series in West Ashley and the AT&T Audience Network continues to work on the Mr. Mercedes series in the area.
HBO was in the Sandhurst neighborhood for filming three days last week. They rented a home and also paid people to park cars and stage equipment in their garages and driveways. More than 100 cast and crew members were shuttled to the film site in 15-passenger vans with tinted windows. Hundreds of vehicles and logistical stations were located at Northbridge Baptist Church and the Masonic Center during the filming.
An advance agent representing HBO went door-to-door to let neighbors know about the film schedule and asked them to sign a release form. The filming took place seamlessly, with little disruption to the neighborhood. People continued to walk their dogs and carry out their normal daily routines. Charleston Police Department was paid by HBO to provide a security presence throughout the filming. The HBO agent has visited various local businesses and attractions, lining up sites for future scenes.
