West Ashley’s two public libraries are partnering with the Charleston County School District in the 2019 summer reading program and have had more than 1000 participants to date. The reading program concludes August 17. Students were pre-registered for the reading program in May, and representatives from the Cynthia Hurd Regional Library visited the West Ashley schools to promote the program. Next summer, the Bees Ferry West Ashley Library will be open near West Ashley High School and offer a third area location for summer reading.

Charleston County Public Libraries lined up about 40 sponsors this year to provide prizes for participating students. Students who read at least five hours (about 300 pages) will receive a certificate, a Charleston Riverdogs game pass, and coupons from Taco Bell and Wendy’s. There are increased-value prizes for students who log 15 and 30 reading hours for the summer.

The reading program theme for the summer is A Universe of Stories, emphasizing the space program and science. Former NASA space shuttle astronaut Don Thomas will be making an appearance at Cynthia Hurd Regional Library (1735 N. Woodmere Drive) Thursday, July 17 at noon to discuss his experiences in space and promote an interest in science.
