After months on planning, citizen input workshops, and stakeholder meetings, a preliminary report on the West Ashley Master plan will be presented Saturday at the Center Court area of Citadel Mall from 10 am to noon. There will be 300 chairs set up and 300 clicker devices to enable participants to answer questions about what they want to see in West Ashley’s future.
Drawings produced by consulting group Dover Kohl will be displayed on a big screen and participants will be asked to respond to the projections. The drawings are based on input provided by more than 550 citizens who attended workshops throughout West Ashley and technical experts from government, private sector and non-profit entities.
The report will cover a wide variety of areas, ranging from economic development, traffic, drainage, recreation, housing and landscaping. The presentation is being described as A Work in Progress because there is still a lot of investigation and citizen feedback needed to develop the West Ashley Master Plan, which will ultimately need to be approved by Charleston City Council. Charleston County Council, the South Carolina Department of Transportation and private sector entities will all have active roles in implementation.
People wishing to attend the presentation should enter through the JC Penney entrance or the Southeast entrance near Planet Fitness. The Citadel Mall now has local ownership for the first time in its history and is a key component of the West Ashley revitalization process.
