West Ashley – Advanced Studies Magnet, a middle school located in the former Middleton High School building on William Kennerty Drive, has a record enrollment in its magnet program for academically gifted students.  In its fourth year, the magnet program now includes 150 students, representing about 25% of the school population.  The program is available to all students in the St. Andrews Constituent District 10 attendance area.

Magnet program students engage in a variety of project-based learning opportunities, which involve the creation of posters, charts and models to illustrate the concepts explored.  Students give presentations to their classmates explaining the results of their projects.  The students also participate in a variety of field trip experiences, including the Birds of Prey preserve, the Career Technical Education (CTE) Career Fair, and the Charleston Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Festival.  Guest speakers are brought into the classrooms, including representatives from MUSC, Clemson University 4-H Extension, and veterans groups.

The West Ashley magnet students have won championships in Spelling Bee and Math Bowl competitions.  They complete middle school with high school credits in Algebra 1, Geometry and English and participate in the HarborCats sports programs.  The school is under the leadership of Principal Brant Glover.
