Owners John Hagerty and Susan Simons, along with Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and members of the West Ashley Revitalization Commission (WARC) did a ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Schoolhouse, a former elementary school converted into an office complex on Wed.. Following a $1.4 Million acquisition and $1.6 Million renovation for the 25,000 square foot property at 720 Magnolia Rd., Hagerty was pleased to announce that all of the office spaces are leased.  The largest tenant is Charleston Parks Conservancy, which operates the 3.7 acre Magnolia Park and Community Garden adjacent to the property.

The facility includes a commercial kitchen and events center in the former Albemarle School, which will be rented for parties, wedding receptions and community events. It was the site for the April WARC meeting. Mayor Tecklenburg referred to a tenant who owns a technology company and lives within walking distance of the building. He said, “This is a perfect example of what we’re looking for in the revitalization process.”

The focus of the meeting was to alert residents to the upcoming community input workshops and planning design studios, which kick off Mon., Apr. 24 from 6-9 pm at John Wesley Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Hwy. The sessions will involve residents gathering around tables and providing feedback to facilitators from the consultant firm Dover Kohl about issues they care about.

The planning design studio sessions will be held at the Citadel Mall Center Court area from May 8-12.  Participants are requested to enter through the JC Penney store.  The drop-in format will run from 9 am to 8 pm, and members of the community will have an opportunity to respond to design drawings for different parts of West Ashley verbally and in writing. On Sat., May 13 from 10 am to noon, participants will be able to vote on design concepts on hand-held devices in a summary session. A detailed schedule of the workshops is available at http://www.PlanWestAshley.com
