The West Ashley Revitalization Commission (WARC) June meeting will be held Wednesday at 5 pm at the Old Schoolhouse, 720 Magnolia Rd. The renovated former elementary school recently re-opened as an office building and quickly went to full occupancy, a great symbol for revitalization in the area.

The meeting will include a recap of the May 10 WARC meeting at Citadel Mall, when the consulting firm Dover Kohl presented Plan West Ashley, a Work in Progress. The presentation included a controversial rendering of the Citadel Mall without a parking lot, using the assumption that mall shoppers will ride bicycles or buses to get there. WARC Chairman Peter Shahid, a member of Charleston City Council, will call on commission members to present feedback on community engagement, infrastructure and sustainability, transportation, zoning, economic development, and housing. The meeting will also include an affordable housing strategy presentation by Charleston Department of Housing and Community Development Director Geona Shaw-Johnson, with a focus on the nearby Maryville/Ashleyville communities. The meeting will include a public comment period.
