West Ashley High School (WAHS) biology teacher Emily Sandifer was awarded the Guiding Light of Excellence award by the

Emily Sandifer and Christy McLean

Charleston County School District (CCSD) Friday. The award was established this year to recognize an outstanding first-year teacher. The award was presented by Christy McLean with the CCSD Office of Teacher Effectiveness, which provides training for all first-year teachers in the district.

Sandifer is a College of Charleston graduate, who was inspired to enter the teaching profession through her volunteer work with the faith-based non-profit Metanoia Community Development Foundation. The group does home renovations, mentoring and entrepreneurship training in North Charleston’s high-poverty Chicora/Cherokee neighborhood. One of the projects sponsored by the     foundation is a community garden, where community residents grow and harvest produce.

WAHS Associate Principal Nick Reece praised Sandifer for being an engaged and student-centered teacher. He said, “Emily has done a great job in her first year of teaching. She is a very knowledgeable and hard-working teacher and has done a remarkable job creating positive relationships with her students.” Sandifer says she values student input into which teaching techniques help her students learn. WAHS has about 1700 students and one of the most diverse student bodies in CCSD.

I know how much hard work and creative energy you’ve put into teaching. You have repeatedly related how much you care about your students and want them to learn. You’re a fine teacher and I am so pleased that your efforts are being recognized. This award is well deserved.
