Van Atkins, owner of West Ashley-based Van’s Tree Service, is having difficulty finding the workers he needs to fill the orders his business has for tree trimming and removal. The worker shortage has led to a six to seven week backlog, as peak hurricane season approaches. Tree trimming is a vital part of a storm preparation checklist in order to keep homes safe. Significant home damage was caused by fallen tree limbs from Tropical Storm Irma in 2017.

Atkins said, “Every contractor I know is having a hard time finding workers.” He has been advertising his eight open positions on Craig’s List and Lead Stream for months. Most of the positions require no prior experience and the only qualifications are possession of a valid driver’s license and passing a drug test. Atkins’ company provides workers with on-the-job training and offers starting pay of $15 per hour.

Van’s Tree Service has been operating in the Charleston area since 1967. People interested in applying for an opening there should call 843-501-9549. For a complete list of tree trimming and removal services in the area, click here.
