Republican Congressional nominee Katie Arrington officially opens her campaign office at Harrell Square shopping center, 2000 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, today at 5:30 pm. The candidate, a current state representative, is asking supporters to bring school supplies to help students prepare for the first day of school Monday. She defeated long-time incumbent Mark Sanford in the June primary.

Arrington campaigned on being a strong ally of President Donald Trump and backs funding a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Trump sent her an endorsement on Twitter on the day of the June primary, which some observers believe put her over the top in a close race against Sanford, who has often been critical of Trump. She has since received endorsements from National Right To Life and the sheriffs of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton and Beaufort counties, which make up the 1st Congressional District.

The Democrat in the race, first-time candidate Joe Cunningham, is closely aligned with the policies of Democrat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. For example, he proposes lowering the eligibility age for Medicare insurance from 65 to 55 in an already financially stressed system. Arrington has termed her opponent “Pelosi Joe.” The 1st Congressional District has been held by a Republican since 1981. Election day is November 6.
