Left-leaning non-profit End Citizens United sponsored a poll in the 1st Congressional District recently, showing Republican Katie Arrington leading Democrat Joe Cunningham 49% to 42%, with 9% identifying as undecided. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, surveyed 762 registered voters in the district. Arrington knocked off incumbent Mark Sanford in the June primary.

End Citizens United was formed in opposition to a 2010 Supreme Court ruling which stated that the government can’t restrict independent expenditures for political advertising by non-profits, corporations and labor unions. The group is opposed to corporations engaging in political speech. All of the candidates it endorses are Democrats, with Cunningham being the only South Carolina candidate endorsed by the group.

Arrington, who survived a near-fatal head-on car collision in June, was endorsed by President Donald Trump on the day of the primary in her close win over Sanford. She has made flooding prevention a key issue in the campaign. She is conducting weekly meetings in communities from Bluffton to Goose Creek to learn about flooding concerns and has pledged to have one staff member who will exclusively focus on flooding prevention solutions. Arrington is making an appearance Sunday at 5 pm at Patriots Point with conservative commentator Eric Bolling, a former Fox News anchor.
